    Dispelling Myths Surrounding LASIK Surgery

    Last updated 2 months ago

LASIK is a truly impressive form of surgery which allows people who have been wearing vision-correcting devices for years to improve their eyesight. Yet a number of myths have sprung up about the LASIK procedure. Here, we try to dispel some of the major ones:

Myth: LASIK is a “Lunchtime” Procedure
Because LASIK does not resemble conventional surgery, many people mistakenly believe that it’s a simple procedure that requires little to no recovery time. Yet having LASIK performed means that you will be under sedation and local anesthetic, and that you will spend a few days at home afterward, recovering. You will need to avoid applying cosmetics around your eyes for up to two weeks after the procedure, and must avoid strenuous physical activity for up to one month.

    A Look at ReZoom Lenses

    Last updated 2 months ago

In the past, cataract surgery could only restore vision at limited distances. With ReZoom lenses, however, those suffering from both cataract and refractive errors can enjoy unimpeded eyesight at any range. Unlike traditional lenses, ReZoom lenses allow for clear vision at both near and far distances. As a result, individuals who undergo ReZoom surgery can have both their cataract problems and refractive errors corrected at the same time. Whether you have trouble reading the newspaper or street signs, ReZoom lenses can alleviate both your cloudy vision and focus issues. They can even eliminate your need for eyeglasses.

Would you like to learn more about what ReZoom lenses can do for you? Then call Ellis Eye & Laser Medical Center at (888) 690-9689 to schedule an appointment. Our clinic offers the most advanced vision correction techniques for patients in the San Francisco and Corte Madera areas. Let us help you achieve the clear eyesight you deserve.

Everything You Need to Know About Refractive Errors

    Last updated 2 months ago

Refractive errors are widespread among people of all ages. Though the types of refractive errors vary, they have in common a malformation of the cornea, eye, or both. In years past, most refractive errors could be managed with either eyeglasses or contact lenses. Thanks to today’s Lasik surgery, many refractive error sufferers can receive safe and swift vision correction care that permanently eliminates their eyesight problems. If you suspect that you may have a refractive error, the following information may help you determine the cause of your vision difficulty.

    Myopia
Many people know myopia by its more common name: nearsightedness. As the name indicates, individuals with nearsightedness can generally see objects within close distances, but cannot make out items from afar. This occurs because of an overly steep cornea. If the cornea is raised, the light rays entering it cannot reach the back of the eye, where the retina is. The retina is responsible for sending along light signals to the brain, where they are processed as images.

    Hyperopia
Hyperopia is another term for farsightedness. Unlike myopia sufferers, those with hyperopia can typically see far objects, but have trouble distinguishing near items. For instance, individuals with farsightedness may not be able to read a newspaper. Hyperopia stems from an overly flat cornea or shortened eye, which allows light rays to converge beyond the retina. As a result, long distances appear clear while close ranges are hazy.

    Astigmatism
Unlike either myopia or hyperopia, astigmatism indicates a misshapen cornea that distorts vision at various distances. If the cornea does not have a smooth, rounded surface, light rays that penetrate it may not be able to converge at all. This then prohibits the retina from sensing these signals and sending them to the brain for processing.

    Understanding Cataract Surgery

    Last updated 2 months ago

If your vision is becoming blurry, you may be suffering from cataracts. This video animation explains how cataract surgery can correct impaired vision.

Cataract surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that removes a damaged eye lens and replaces it with a new one. The process begins with a minor incision to the eye just above the iris. With a microscopic probe, the surgeon breaks down and extracts the cloudy lens, which is contained in an elastic capsule. Once the procedure is completed, most individuals will have fully restored vision in less than two months.

Ellis Eye & Laser Medical Center offers convenient cataract surgery options for patients in the greater San Francisco area. To schedule an appointment with a cataract surgeon, call (888) 690-9689.

Understanding the Risk Factors Associated with Cataracts

    Last updated 3 months ago

Are your eyes becoming increasingly sensitive to sunlight? Do you have trouble making out objects at night? If either of these circumstances sounds familiar, you may have cataracts. Cataracts are a degenerative condition wherein the eye lenses become progressively clouded, preventing clear and pain-free vision. Experts do not yet know why some people develop cataracts while others do not, but research indicates that some factors may increase a person’s risk for this condition. The following information highlights some of the more common risk factors that may lead to cataracts:

    Lifestyle Habits
Studies have found that certain behaviors may increase your chances of getting cataracts. In particular, too much alcohol consumption can facilitate the occurrence of cataracts. Cataracts may also result from smoking or spending a lot of time in the sun. To reduce your risk of this condition, monitor your alcohol intake and stop smoking as soon as possible. If you spend a great deal of time outdoors, always wear eyewear that provides 100 percent UVA and UVB protection.

    Existing Medical Conditions
Links have been determined between cataracts and several other health conditions. Individuals who suffer from high blood pressure, obesity, or diabetes typically experience cataracts on a greater scale than people who don’t have these medical concerns. Given that your blood pressure levels, weight, and risk for type 2 diabetes are largely within your control, take the appropriate measures to avoid these conditions and you can also lower your chances of cataracts.

    Advancing Age
Unfortunately, age is one risk factor that cannot be managed. Cataracts most commonly affect older individuals. The good news is that even with advancing age, you don’t need to tolerate the occurrence of cataracts. Cataract surgery is a widely performed and highly effective means of restoring clear eyesight. To ensure that you receive the medical assistance you need before your vision deteriorates, consult a cataract surgeon today.

Ellis Eye & Laser Medical Center provides safe and comfortable cataract treatment options for San Jose area patients.
